4 Important Eye Care Tips For Individuals With Diabetes

If you have diabetes, you need to be more aware of your overall health as diabetes impacts your overall health, not just what you eat. Your eyes are one part of your body that are more sensitive to damage and disease when you have diabetes, so you need to make sure you take care of your eyes carefully.

Visit Your Eye Doctor Once a Year

To start with, when you have diabetes, you need to make sure that you visit your eye doctor at least once a year. You need to see your eye doctor on a regular basis when you have diabetes, and you need to make sure your eye doctor is aware that you have diabetes. There are different screening that your eye doctor will put you through when you have diabetes to track the condition of your eyes over time and to make sure your eyes are not negatively impacted by your diabetes.

Take Control of Your Blood Sugar

Second, you need to take control of your blood sugar levels. Your blood sugar levels impact your overall health, not just how you feel on a day to day basis. When you fail to keep your blood sugar under control, the tiny blood vessels in your eyes can get damaged, which can lead to a host of debilitating eye conditions. You should get an A1c blood test four times a year; this will allow you to track and see how you have managed to control your blood sugar over the long-term, and the information from the test will allow you to make changes to how you control your blood sugar from a big-picture perspective.

Give Up the Smokes

Smoking on its own is bad, but when you combine smoking with diabetes, you are really in trouble. Smoking can cause issues with your blood vessels as can high blood sugar levels, which puts your eyes more at risk of getting damaged. Giving up smoking can be difficult, so be sure to work with your doctor and get help quitting if you are not able to do it on your own.

Get Moving

Next, if you want to protect the health of your eyes, you need to get moving. Being active can help you keep your blood sugar under control, which can thus help you keep your eyes healthy.

Your eyes are not separate from the rest of your body. If you want to protect your eyesight, you need to see your eye doctor at least once a year to monitor your eye health, and you need to make sure that you monitor your blood sugar, stay active, and give up smoking to take care and protect your eyes.
